Specialist  High Skills Major Program (SHSM) - Health and Wellness

For students who are interested in Kinesiology, child care worker, fitness instructors, doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, youth care workers, hospital porters, medical technicians, firefighters, teachers, EA’s , Early Childhood Education, Funeral Services, Laboratory Technology, Pharmacist, dentist, Nutritionist, Social worker, Recreational aide, massage therapy - any occupation in the Health and Wellness sector.

The program allows students to build a foundation of sector - focused knowledge and skills before graduating and entering the workforce / apprenticeship / college / university.

SHSM enables students to:
        - customize their secondary education to focus on sector specific knowledge that
                a) is valued by the health and wellness sector and post secondary institutions
                b) prepares students for post secondary choices in this sector / field
                c) explore career goals and make informed post secondary decisions
                d) take part in “reach ahead” experiences that will give them confidence for the
                                     future
                e) access resources and equipment and expertise that may not be available in
                                  their secondary school
                f) develop essential skills and work habits necessary for a career in this field


Required components of SHSM

        - a bundle of 9 credits - 4 health and wellness major credits
                                - 3 other required credits from Ontario curriculum (Eng/Math/Sci)
                                - 2 co-op credits - related to sector - Health and Wellness

        - 7 sector - recognized certifications and or training programs - provided through
                                programs offered at Adam Scott (ie. CPR, Standard First Aid, WHMIS)

        - experiential learning and career exploration opportunities within the sector

        - “reach ahead” experiences connected to the student’s post secondary pathway
        
        - development of essential skills and work habits required in the sector and the use of the
                  Ontario Skills Passport for the purpose of documentation


When Students Graduate
        - their OSSD high school diploma will have a “red seal” which indicates completion of
                   the SHSM
        - SHSM Record form which will include a list of all certification / training and the date
                they were earned
